Step 7: Support mentors and protégés to ensure regular interaction; trouble shoot as problems occur

Back to Step 7.

Penn State's Experience:  What did the Penn State AAC Mentor Project do to help trouble shoot when problems occurred?

All of the mentors and protégés were encouraged to let the project team know if there were any concerns at any time. The team also contacted mentors and protégés at regular intervals to check that everything was going well and to ensure their satisfaction with the program.

When problems occurred, the team would work with the mentor or protégé to describe the problem and brainstorm appropriate solutions. Typically problems were easily resolved by the team and the mentors and protégés involved. In a very small percentage of the cases, protégés were re-assigned to new mentors to make a better match.

If the team ever had significant concerns about the safety and well being of one of the participants, the team immediately contacted participants (and their legal guardians as appropriate) to make sure that the problem was addressed and the appropriate support structure was in place for the participant.
