Step 5: Help protégés determine their individual goals

Before protégés start their mentoring program, it may be useful to have them think about why they want to get involved in the program. By thinking about their goals, protégés may be better prepared to
  • Select a mentor who is equipped to help with these goals and
  • Benefit from the mentoring relationship.
These goals provide a starting point for the protégé and mentor in their relationship. As time passes and the mentoring relationship develops, it may be appropriate for mentors and protégés to re-visit these goals. Some goals may be met; these achievements should be celebrated! Other goals may no longer seem important or relevant to the protégés. These goals may be revised. Furthermore, new issues may arise, resulting in new goals that are priorities for the protégé.
