Step 6: Match mentors and protégés

If the mentor program is to be effective, then it is important that each protégé is matched with an appropriate mentor. Matching mentors and protégés is a challenging process. There are so many factors to consider, including
  • The needs and goals of the protégé
  • The skills and experiences of the mentor, and
  • Their individual personalities and expectations.
There are many factors involved in trying to predict effective relationships between mentors and protégés. It is often difficult to know how two people will react to each other and how their relationship will develop.

Some mentor programs simply assign mentors to protégés and then include training for the mentors on how to make the relationship work. Other programs may include an interview process to gather information about the mentor and the protégé before pairing them together. Finally, some mentor programs allow participants a choice for example, mentors select the protégé they feel they would be best able to help, or protégés request the mentor they believe is the best match for them.
