Step 1: Define the goals of the mentor program

Back to Step 1.

Penn State's Experience:  What were the goals of the Penn State AAC Mentor Project?

The goals of the Penn State AAC Mentor Project were general ones. Teenagers and young adults who use AAC face many challenges in their daily lives including challenges related to
  • education
  • employment
  • family
  • social relationships
  • independent living
  • personal care attendants
  • transportation
  • finances
  • AAC
  • other assistive technologies, and so on.
They need to have a resource to turn to when they struggle with problems or want to reach personal goals. In the Penn State AAC Mentor Project, older adults who also used AAC served as mentors and offered guidance, support, and information to help with goals and problems in a wide range of areas.
